Area: from Hvammstangi to Ásbyrgi

Attractive areas: Mývatn and Krafla area, Jökulsárglúfur National Park - Ásbyrgi and Detifoss area, Eyjafjörður fjord, Askja, Aldeyjarfoss

Mývatn area:
Mývatn (midge lake) one of the largest lake (37km2). Islands, islets and pseudocraters in the lake. Hverfell symmetrical crater, 2500 years old, 460m high. the diameter of the crater is approximately 1000m. The crater is composed of loose gravel. Dimmuborgir a giant lava field, spectacular lava creations, nesting place of the white eagle. Pseudocraters which were formed by gas explosions when molten lava flowed into the water. Bjarnarflag geothermal swimming pool (sometimes called 2nd Blue Lagoon in Iceland).

Krafla area:
Leirhnjúkur and Krafla caldera and lava field. Bit less than 2 hours walking, good view to the lava field. Colorful, active area. Eruptions: 1727, 1746, 1975, 1984. Also in this place all the volcanic activity, boiling mud pots, steam eruptions, high temperature small lakes.
Stóra-Víti: 320m wide crater from the year 1724. In the crater cold water lake. Víti is inactive.
Námafjall colorful mountain and Hverir geothermal field. Boiling mud, steam, sulfur deposits, boiling springs. Amazing area.

Jökulsárglúfur National Park: drive forward from Húsavík, road 85. Ásbyrgi canyon, dark cliffs protect the amazinf forest inside the canyon, small lake. Hjóðaklettar (echoing rocks), Rauðhólar, rock pillars Karl and Kerling. Forward the route to south Detifoss waterfall (most powerful in Europe), dark strong waterfall. Both side of Detifoss are reachable (west and east), the road to the west is F862 worth, 22 km long. The eastern road is 864, bit longer (28km), also bad road. Passable bz passanger cars, but it is a car killer road. No fords.

Askja volcano: road F88. Also reachable from road F910. For 4WD vehicles only. River crossings.
